Day 1: Luma AI

Welcome to the 5th year of the 31 Days of ARVRinEDU event! Every day in March, you'll find exciting new or updated AR/VR resources for the classroom. Each resource has easy-to-follow instructions and a short video showing the tool's capabilities. Get ready to take your immersive learning to the next level!

What is the metaverse without 3D objects? We need access to 3D assets to create augmented and virtual reality, and I'm thrilled to share a great app to take your 3D projects to the next level! Luma AI's advanced technology uses photorealism to capture high-quality 3D objects with your mobile device. Whether you're creating 3D objects for augmented or virtual reality, Luma AI has you covered.

Using AI-powered photorealism technology, students can capture 3D scenes with details, reflections, and lighting. Using LiDAR technology, reflections can be a huge problem, so this technology has great promise. Another benefit of Luma AI is the ability to use the app on iOS and Android devices (future). Currently, we are restricted to the Pro model iOS devices for LiDAR scanning.

I had a chance to test out Luma AI at TCEA last month, and Frank Moody was gracious enough to step in. Considering this was my first scan, I think it turned out amazing. The possibilities with Luma AI are endless, and I can't wait to see what you create!

Steps to get started

  1. Download the Luma AI app (iOS only for now).

  2. Select the plus button at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Use the guided option and tap the screen to locate where you want to scan.

  4. Adjust the box with blue arrows to fit the object into the box.

  5. Move around the object and select finish.

  6. Download the object on your mobile device or online.
