As many of you probably know by now, I’m a huge fan of the free McGraw Hill AR app. I love the gamified learning experience using augmented reality. The lessons are designed with augmented reality in mind to bring the learning to life. Rather than making the content fit in augmented reality, an immersive experience is necessary to bring a deeper understanding of the content.

McGraw Hill has released several new updates this year with lessons in ELA, science, math, and social studies. One innovative lesson described below is Grammarbot, an augmented-reality activity that teaches students about misplaced and dangling modifiers.

“Grammarbot needs your help. Teach him how to correct sentences with misplaced and dangling modifiers.”

In this activity, you will teach GrammarBot how to recognize and correct misplaced and dangling modifiers. It shows two sentences: one with a correct sentence and another with a misplaced or dangling modifier. Once the sentence is selected, Grammarbot shows you an augmented reality scene to demonstrate the sentence.

For example, the sentence “My neighbor needs to hire someone to care for his dog who speaks Spanish” paints a picture of a dog and its owner, with the dog communicating in Spanish. The correct sentence should read “My neighbor needs to hire someone who speaks Spanish to take care of his dog.” The new sentence depicts a dog sitter speaking Spanish.

The Grammarbot activity focuses on the following standards: ELA Language: Conventions of Standard English L.6.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Grade 7 L.7.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. L.7.1.c Place phrases and clauses within a sentence, recognizing and correcting misplaced and dangling modifiers. L.8.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Steps to get started:

  2. Select English Language Arts as the subject

  3. Select the Grammarbot: Modifiers activity

  4. Choose the correct sentence to view in augmented reality or the wrong sentence to display a funny scene due to a misplaced or dangling modifier

  5. Enjoy!
