Day 9 - Merge EDU Screen Recorder

Welcome to the #ARVRinEDU Advent Calendar! Whether you're an educator, a tech enthusiast, or simply curious about the future of learning, there's something here for you. The #ARVRinEDU Advent Calendar is your go-to resource for staying ahead in the ever-evolving edtech world.

If you’ve been following the ARVRinEDU blog for some time, you’ll recognize that every blog series event will always include Merge EDU because it’s a perfect tool to include in all classrooms. The technology is simple to implement and a powerful way to present content and understanding. The Merge EDU app provides an immersive platform where students can explore augmented reality (AR) experiences. By far, Merge EDU is most prevalent throughout my blog and across the world in classrooms for a good reason - it’s incredible!

One feature initially available in the Merge EDU apps has been gone in the past versions as the technology has adjusted and required some technical updates. Although iOS and Android devices offered similar capabilities, they required more technical knowledge and skills from students, which hindered usage. After missing this feature for a time, I’m excited to share the great news.

It’s back! The important feature of the Merge EDU app that’s been missing is the built-in screen recording button. Students need to experience the AR lessons, but they also need to share their augmented experiences with others easily. Below are examples of how it benefits students in sharing their learning and understanding with teachers and peers.

Captivating Learning Experiences

The built-in screen recorder allows students to capture these moments of exploration, creating a record of their learning journey. This capability is particularly beneficial in subjects like science, geography, or history, where visual and interactive content can dramatically enhance comprehension. The screen recording feature is available in the Merge Explorer, Object Viewer, and the Hologlobe apps, so the capabilities extend across multiple subjects.

Peer Learning

One key benefit of the Merge EDU screen recording feature is that it helps students learn from each other. Students can share their recordings with classmates, creating a collaborative learning environment. This exchange of ideas and discoveries encourages students to view topics from different perspectives, enhancing understanding and promoting a culture of collective inquiry and support.

Assessment

For teachers, the screen recording feature provides a window into a student’s thought process and understanding. By reviewing students' recordings, educators can assess how effectively students are engaged with the content and identify areas where they may need further support. This insight allows for more personalized feedback and tailored instruction, ultimately leading to better instruction.

Building Confidence and Communication Skills

Encouraging students to record and share their learning experiences builds confidence. We all witnessed the success of the Flipgrid platform (when it was available) and most of the benefits came from the desire for students to have a voice in their learning. In the same way, the recording feature provides them with the opportunity to articulate their thoughts and reasoning, enhancing communication skills. As students explain their interactions with AR content, they learn to express complex ideas clearly and concisely, an essential skill both in and out of the classroom.

How does this work?

  1. Select the record button at the top right corner of the screen

  2. Give rights to the app to screen recording (including with or without audio)

  3. Select the record button at the top right corner of the screen again to start the recording

  4. Tap the same button to stop the recording

  5. View your recording and select “Save” to keep the video

Merge has successfully done it again! Empowering students to capture, share, and reflect on their learning nurtures a more engaging and collaborative educational environment. Stay tuned for the next Merge EDU highlight during the ARVRinEDU Advent Calendar!
