McGraw Hill's AR app has been a long-time favorite with so many lessons that engage students in immersive experiences. One of the latest lesson activities released under social studies is Map Dash! Students will navigate a map by dragging a direction on the device. The app uses augmented reality to help students understand how to use a map as it relates to directions.

Individual or Group Activity

Students can either select to play the Map Dash game independently (solo) or against others in the classroom (group). Each challenge will ask students to navigate the map with a start point and an end point. It begins like a race, and students must listen to directions and guidance to find the end point.

Navigation

The activity will guide students by audibly sharing directions that will include:

  • Cardinal directions: north, east, south, west, northwest, southeast, etc.

  • Left or right

  • Measurements in feet

  • Landmark descriptions

  • Legend map features: stop sign, crosswalk, bus stops, traffic lights, etc.

Benefits for Students

Using the McGraw Hill AR app offers numerous benefits for students. It enhances spatial awareness and critical thinking skills as they navigate and solve problems in real-time. The interactive nature of the app keeps students engaged and motivates them to learn through play. The specific benefits of this activity provides students a fun way to learn how to navigate maps. This skill may not seem significant with the advancements of directions through technology, but many students struggle to hear directions and accurately follow them. The activity promotes collaboration and communication when used in group settings.
